Sociology

The Division of Continuing Studies offers the Bachelor of General Studies degree with an area of concentration in sociology.

Required:

30 hours from the department of sociology

No less than 9 hours upper division

Optional:

An allied field of 1–9 hours may be taken in ONE of the following departments as part of the 30 hours in the area of concentration:

Anthropology
Economics
History
Psychology
Religion

Additional information:

Students interested in graduate studies should contact the graduate adviser in the sociology department to make sure necessary classes are taken to enter graduate programs.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

No course from a two-year institution which is also offered as an upper division course at UNO can be used in this area of concentration.

Career Information:
An area of concentration in sociology involves the scientific study of patterns of human behavior and society. Sociologists explore how people structure social life and the consequences of those structures for human behavior. A student of sociology can explore areas such as families, experiences of racial and ethnic groups, media, organizations, social inequality, women and feminism, sexuality, corporate culture, human emotions, welfare or education reform, human rights, and issues regarding peace and war. Sociology is a versatile major and helps develop skills and understanding useful in a variety of settings. The degree will also provide the necessary knowledge to pursue an advanced degree, if desired. Sociology students may find careers in human/social services, government or nonprofit organizations, criminal justice, education, research, human resources, customer service, business management, public relations, politics, marketing, and counseling.
