Additional Information

This area of concentration must contain at least 30 semester hours, with 9 hours of upper division (3000-4000 or any math or science course at a higher level than those required above in biology, chemistry, and physics and beyond MATH 1960 and GEOL 1180). Any specific department in which a student earns 12 hours may be used as a secondary field, as long as 30 hours are still listed in the area of concentration. Additional hours beyond the 30 may also be used to meet requirements of the science core area.

No credit from a community college will be considered upper level in the general science area of concentration. If a student has earned 6 semester hours of credit equivalent to the above courses in one science area at a community college, further courses at UNO in that area will count as upper level courses. Courses from a four-year college at a higher level than the ones specified in the paragraph above will be counted as upper level.

Courses in any natural science area will be used to finish the area of concentration requirements.

Career Information:
An area of concentration in general science is a broad study of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. It can provide the knowledge necessary to pursue careers or further study in any of those areas. General science students may use this multidisciplinary program towards work in engineering, neurosciences, environmental sciences, technical writing, natural history, education, research, and biophysical or biochemistry sciences, which may benefit from focus in several sciences. It can also lead to careers in healthcare by preparing students for medical school and other professional/advanced degrees or licenses (i.e. pharmacy, nursing, pathology, physical therapy, radiology, public health, etc.).
