Bachelor of General Studies Area of Concentration

General Administration

The Division of Continuing Studies offers the Bachelor of General Studies degree with an area of concentration in general administration for students wishing to take business courses. Public Administration courses are allowed.

Students in the Division of Continuing Studies ARE PERMITTED TO COUNT ONLY 30 HOURS OF BUSINESS CREDIT TOWARD THEIR DEGREE PROGRAM.

Required:

  • 30 hours from Accounting, Finance and Banking, Business Administration, Law and Society, Management, Marketing, Real Estate, and Public Administration
  • At least 9 hours must be upper division
  • No students from Continuing Studies may enroll in MGMT 4480 or MGMT 4490

Optional:

An allied field of 1–9 hours from ONE of the following departments may be used as part of the 30 hours in the area of concentration:

  • Economics
  • Political Science.

Additional Information

This area of concentration is not similar to a BS/BA specialization, since students receiving that degree must earn at least 60 hours of business credit. Nonetheless, students who wish to make use of nontraditional credit or to have a more flexible, limited program may find this area of concentration beneficial. Students need to plan their 30 hours of business courses carefully to make the best use of their business credit.

Students in the Division of Continuing Studies who choose to take upper division business courses will be in classes with students from the College of Business Administration who are required to take courses in Economics, Accounting, and Business Statistics before enrolling in upper division courses.

Career Information:
An area of concentration in general administration is focused on the management and operations of business and public organizations. It will also provide the necessary knowledge to pursue an advanced degree, if desired. General administration students, depending on their particular coursework, may find careers in accounting, finance, banking, management, marketing, human resources, retail sales, government or non-profit agencies, logistics, real estate, law, manufacturing, insurance, and customer services.
